NOTES ON "ART SPACE" SOUNDTRACK
Sometimes, when people really like a song-they hit repeat.
The song can become a private anthem, a personal theme song or just a song to hear again because it evokes a feeling or sets a mood.
An integral part of the film's action centers around a character who is listening to the same song playing over and over again.
When choosing the song, I considered what song the character might be feeling and also one that I as editor could stand to hear over again.
I chose "Stopping Bullets" by Pete Tunney, a friend of mine whose self titled album is one of my favorites (Courage Records 2000). I was excited that he gave permission to use "Stopping Bullets" which mixes complex imagery with heart felt sentiment and wraps it in a deceptively simple melody.
When composing the rest of the film's score, I was inspired by the idea of playing the same song over and over. I took the permission to use the song a few steps further and began the process of extracting sounds from the recorded song. I digitally looped bits and pieces and played with time and pitch. I then gave the loops to some pros, Steve Halpern and Beau Van Donkelaar for sweetening and concepting. I then arranged the samples/loops into compositions for the opening sequence and interlude.
Additional music was provided by Chris Baskous, who also plays the SURFER in the film. He learned "Stopping Bullets" by listening to the recording and created his own ukulele version of the song.
The soundtrack is one song in many incarnations.
